Week of October 27-31
Our Week:
We have had a fun and busy week preparing for Halloween. We worked on the letters Jj and Pp and reviewed all previous letters. We are including a pencil grip guideline to assist you and your child with writing and consistency. The students are becoming experts at reading In a Dark, Dark Wood. We have unscrambled sentences and continued to work on letter orientation with sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm zone. We painted and created a pumpkin patch in our classroom, learned about the pumpkin life cycle in gardening and harvested pumpkins we grew. We worked on spelling sight words, HWOT letter formation, Lexia Core5, Tool Box personal necklace, and Writer’s Workshop. Children worked on the dictionary spelling for our seasonal Halloween words hidden around the room.
Tools of the Mind
Next week we are going to shift into a new unit with our Tools of the Mind. We will begin our Grocery Store unit. We ask that in the next week you take your child with you to the grocery store and guide them with some observations about:
· Environment (temperature, organization, layout)
· Employees (clothing, language, number of employees and areas they work)
· Food and the display and organization
· Sections of the grocery store (deli, frozen, produce, floral, check-out)
· Customers (language, payment, grocery carts, shopping lists)
· Machinery/Tools
· Delivery zone
· Any other points of interest
Have fun and discuss these observations with your child. Next week we will collect information and share with peers. These ideas will help build creativity for our new unit and be the building block for generating ideas. If your child has items they would like to contribute to our theme, they are welcome to bring and share.
Halloween is coming soon. Your children are very excited for this special day. Children may wear costumes to school for this event. We ask that scary costumes or weapons be kept at home and saved for other events. We need to be able to clearly see children’s faces. Please label all accessory parts of costume.
